(Bqp.vn) - On February 25, in Hanoi, the 3rd Vietnam - South Africa Defence Policy Dialogue took place under the co-chair of Senior Lieutenant General Hoang Xuan Chien, Deputy Defence Minister and Acting Secretary for Defence of South Africa Thobekile Gamede.

At the dialogue, Senior Lieutenant General Hoang Xuan Chien emphasized that over the past time, the Vietnam - South Africa defence cooperation has continued to be actively implemented on the basis of the Agreement on defence relations (signed in May 2006) and the directions agreed upon between the two defence leaders, in accordance with the needs and capabilities of each side, achieving a number of outstanding results, such as maintaining regular contacts and exchanges of delegations at all levels; promoting defence industry cooperation; cooperation in logistics, military medicine, UN peacekeeping, training, etc...
Senior General Hoang Xuan Chien suggested that in the coming time, the two defence ministries would continue to promote contacts and exchanges of delegations at all levels; effectively maintain the defence policy dialogue mechanism at the deputy minister level; strengthen cooperation in defence industry, logistics, military medicine, and training; pay attention to and support Vietnam’s peacekeeping forces through experience sharing, training, and provision of professional equipment; continue to coordinate and support each other in regional and international forums.

Ms. Thobekile Gamede highly appreciated the results of defence cooperation between the two countries, especially in the fields of consultation, dialogue, delegation exchanges, defence industry, information sharing, UN peacekeeping, and highly appreciated the role and contributions of Vietnam in solving common regional and world issues.
She agreed with the proposals of Senior Lieutenant General Hoang Xuan Chien on bilateral defence cooperation in the coming time, especially in the fields of defence industry, human resource training, military medicine, logistics, and hoped that the Vietnam - South Africa defence cooperation would further develop, expand and become more substantive and effective, in line with the needs and capabilities of each side

At the dialogue, the two sides also discussed the world and regional situation and issues of mutual concern. Senior Lieutenant General Hoang Xuan Chien emphasized that Vietnam consistently pursues a foreign policy of independence, self-reliance, peace, friendship, cooperation and development, multilateralization and diversification of foreign relations. It is ready to cooperate with countries and international organizations for peace, cooperation and development in the region and the world.
Regarding the East Sea issue, Senior Lieutenant General Hoang Xuan Chien stressed Vietnam’s position that all parties must comply with international law, particularly the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS 1982), uphold the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea (DOC), and work towards an effective and substantive Code of Conduct in the East Sea (COC).
