Tanzania is willing to be an entry point for Vietnamese goods to enter African markets, including East Africa, President Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete assured President Truong Tan Sang at talks after a welcome ceremony in Hanoi on October 27.

The guest voiced his hope for Vietnamese support for Tanzanian trade partners, making it easier for them to bring Tanzanian goods to Vietnam and ASEAN in general.

In addition to co-operation on agriculture and telecommunications, both sides pledged to work more closely on investment, trade, farming, fisheries, education, health care and maritime transport.

The two leaders are committed to facilitating visits at all levels, boosting people-to-people diplomacy and establishing twin cities, with the intention of increasing mutual understanding between the two peoples.

Regarding issues of shared concern, the two leaders vowed to work together closely at global and regional forums.

President Truong Tan Sang thanked Tanzania for backing Vietnam’s accession to the United Nations Human Rights Council for the 2014-2016 tenure. He said he hopes the country will continue to help Vietnam along its path to seek membership in several international organisations.

Vietnam always responds positively to Tanzania’s proposals, he noted.

Kikwete, in turn, made it clear that Tanzania has continuously supported Vietnam and will continue to do so in future, hoping Vietnam will be elected to international organisations for the benefit of the two countries.

Turning their attention to the significance of maritime security, safety and freedom in the East Sea, both sides highlighted the need to address disputes peacefully and in line with international law − especially the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea and the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea, with a view to finalising the terms of the Code of Conduct in the East Sea.

The host accepted Kikwete’s invitation to visit Tanzania in the near future with pleasure. The timing of the visit will be arranged via diplomatic channels.

After the talks, they witnessed the signing of a bilateral agreement on maritime transport.

On the same day, Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong also received President Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete from Tanzania in Ha Noi. Vietnam always appreciates the traditional bilateral relationship with Tanzania, Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong told visiting Tanzanian President Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete at the reception.

At the meeting, the Party leader congratulated Tanzania on its achievements in building and developing the country under the leadership of President Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete, who is also Chairman of the Revolutionary Party of Tanzania (CCM).

He proposed the two countries further boost bilateral co-operation.

The General Secretary agreed to enhance connections between the two Parties, in order to promote friendship and co-operation between the two countries and peoples.

On his part, the Tanzanian President reiterated the traditional relationship between the two countries, and informed the host of the result of his talks with President Truong Tan Sang.

He affirmed he will do his utmost to promote the friendship between the two Parties and peoples.
