Vietnam attends ASEAN Defence Senior Officials’ Meeting

(Bqp.vn) - Deputy Defence Minister Senior Lieutenant General Hoang Xuan Chien led a Vietnamese delegation to attend the ASEAN Defence Senior Official’s Meeting (ADSOM), which was held in Jakarta, Indonesia, on August 2.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Lieutenant General Donny Ermawan Taufanto, Secretary General of the Indonesian Ministry of Defence appreciated the support of all ASEAN’s members.

At the meeting, delegates heard outcomes of the ADSOM Working Group (ADSOM WG); as well as defence cooperation among ASEAN member states. They also discussed and agreed on documents to be submitted to the ADMM and the ADMM Plus for adoption in 2023, including new initiatives, the ADMM Joint Statement and the thematic ADMM Plus Joint Statement.

Addressing the meeting, Senior Lieutenant General Hoang Xuan Chien praised the efforts of the Indonesian Ministry of Defence in ASEAN Chairmanship year. He also expressed his belief that the event will be a success, helping cement the solidarity and strength of ASEAN in order to flexibly and proactively cope with security challenges for a peaceful, prosperous and secure region.

On the same day, Senior Lieutenant General Hoang Xuan Chien met with his Japanese counterpart Kyoshi Serizawa on the sidelines of the ADSOM. At the bilateral meeting, Senior Lieutenant General Hoang Xuan Chien congratulated Mr Kiyoshi Serizawa on his newly appointment as Deputy Defence Minister; looking forward to promote the bilateral defence cooperation in the coming time.

The two sides agreed that the bilateral defence cooperation has become more and more practical and effective over the past time, making an important contribution to the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and Japan.

Also at the meeting, Senior Lieutenant General Hoang Xuan Chien invited his Japanese counterpart to visit Vietnam and co-chair the 10th Vietnam - Japan Defence Policy Dialogue at Deputy Defence Minister Level, as well as attend and direct the Competency Evaluation Program for Prospective UN Peacekeepers (CEPPP) of the ADMM+ Expert Group on peacekeeping cycle 2021 - 2023.
