ActionsStrengthening PPP in emission reduction and climate change adaptation
(VDP) - On 30 October, Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Tran Hong Ha has received Mr. Yvo De Boer, International Consultant, Director in charge of climate change and sustainable development of the international auditing firm KPMG. The two sides have exchanged ideas on reducing greenhouse gas emissions and adapting to climate change in Vietnam. The most important thing of the meeting focuses on cooperation between public and private sectors.
Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Tran Hong Ha received Mr. Yvo De Boer.
Mr. Yvo De Boer said, at present, Vietnam is facing two major problems. Regarding to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, Vietnam needs to pay special attention to energy, especially clean energy. Besides, the government should promote the economic development along with the need to reduce electricity usage.
The second problem is the adaptation. How Vietnam is able to mobilize financial resources to build climate change adaptation projects is still a difficult problem. According to Mr. Yvo De Boer, strengthening cooperation between the public and private sectors is considered one of the effective solutions for Vietnam.
Responding to these issues, Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Tran Hong Ha said that Vietnam now has issued Law on Energy Saving and Efficiency, on the other hand, the state carried out policies to prioritize the development of renewable and clean energy sources… By 2015, the government will eliminate subsidization for coal and electricity prices and move its support for new energy.
"In the future, Vietnam will build carbon credits market. Therefore, Vietnam needs the support from KPMG, suggested he. Vietnam has developed scenarios to cope with climate change. However, the major difficulty is the capital. The capital mobilization from the private sector and international organizations is considered a good way for the Vietnam’s financial mechanism to gradually limit the impact caused by climate change.
