VN, US seek ways to deal with Agent Orange/Dioxin consequences

(Bqp.vn) - The second roundtable of U.S.-Viet Nam Dialogue Group on Agent Orange/Dioxin was held on April 21 in Bien Hoa, southern Dong Nai Province.

Participants discussed and evaluated activities in overcoming consequences of Agent Orange/Dioxin in Viet Nam over the past time and proposed measures to deal with this problem effectively.

Ms. Kyung (KC) Choe, Director of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID)'s Environment and Social Development Office revealed that in 2014, the first phase of a project treating Agent Orange/dioxin in Da Nang international airport will be finished.

The second phase of the project will be launched to finish the treatment of areas seriously affected by dioxin in Da Nang airport by 201, she added.

The USAID is cooperating with the Ministry of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs and other relevant agencies to launch some programs and projects to take care for handicapped, including ones affected by Agent Orange/Dioxin and children, initiated Ms. Kyung (KC) Choe.

A representative from the Vietnam Federation on Disability said, Vietnamese war veterans suffering from the toxic chemical should have also benefited from the US social welfare policies as the victims have in the US, Australia and New Zealand.
